Choosing an NDIS Provider
What should you consider when choosing an NDIS service provider for Supported Independent Living?
When choosing an NDIS service provider, it is important to consider your health and independence goals and how your service provider will facilitate your ability to maintain choice and control over how, where and from whom you receive services.
We’ve prepared this quick guide to help you choose an NDIS provider:
1. Do your research
Researching different providers is crucial to finding the right one for you or your loved one. You can do this through online research (e.g. searching for providers in your local area, such as Brisbane or Gold Coast), using the Provider Finder in the MyPlace portal, or asking local community organisations or health professionals for recommendations. Be sure to check reviews and find a provider that offers the services that you will benefit from the most.
2. Consider what you want from your provider
It is important to consider what it is you want and need from a provider in order to make the most of the disability support services that they offer. It may be useful to create a list of needs and expectations before contacting a provider.
When choosing your disability service provider, be sure to talk to them about your goals and how they can help you achieve them. Whilst you are not required to share a copy of your NDIS plan with your provider, you may choose to share some aspects of this through the MyPlace portal. Sharing information about you and your goals can be a great way to let your service provider assist you in the best way possible.
3. Check that they are qualified
You may have used services already before joining the NDIS, and you may choose to work with them again. However, you may also want to try some new providers when you become an NDIS participant. If you are self-managing, your provider does not need to be registered with the NDIS. However, they do need to have the appropriately qualified and experienced staff to provide disability support. Be sure to ask your provider if they are NDIS registered.
4. Ask Questions
Ask as many questions as you feel are necessary when considering an NDIS provider. You may want to ask:
- How much the service costs
- Whether services can be provided at the times that suit you
- How you make a complaint or resolve a payment issue
- What the service agreement notice period is
- Whether you can choose which staff will work with you
Asking questions is the best way to understand whether a provider is right for you and can deliver the disability services that you require. For example, choice of staff is often a very important consideration in choosing a Supported Independent Living provider, as staff will be living with clients at all times.
5. Don’t be afraid to change your provider
Whether you are unhappy with the service of your current NDIS provider, or your goals have simply changed, sometimes a provider may no longer be suitable for you. Although it may seem easier to stick with an existing provider, finding a new provider that can support your goals and needs will have long-term benefits.
